SC Comparison & RC Questions

by samwong Sun Mar 27, 2016 3:38 pm

To solve a SC comparison issue, the SC strategy guide states that you have to identify the comparison marker first then figure out whether the two items that are being compared make sense. However, the guide doesn’t discuss the correct location of those two items.

SC 6th Edition p103:

Correct: “The clothes looked MORE appealing inside the store THAN on the racks outside.”

In the above sentence, the first item “inside the store” is placed AFTER “more” and the second item “on the rack outside” is placed AFTER “than”. Both items are describing a location, so they are comparable.

Incorrect: “The clothes inside the store looked MORE appealing THAN on the rack outside.”

According to the strategy guide, the above sentence is incorrect because it is comparing “the clothes” (the first item is placed BEFORE “more”) to “on the rack outside” (the second item is placed AFTER “than”).

1) So from the above two sentences, is it correct to say that the second item will always come immediately after “than”?

2) Where is the correct position to put the first item of comparison?

3) MGMAT SC 6th Edition p101: “I will have HIGHER bills THAN last year” According to the strategy guide, the above sentence is correct. So isn’t the above sentence comparing “bills” to “year”?

4) Can you check whether my understanding of the below sentences is correct?

If “less” and “than” are placed together, then “less than” will be placed between the two items that are being compared.

Ie “Oil production in United States is LESS THAN that in Saudi Arabia.”--first item "oil production" and the second item "that".

If “less” and “than” are place apart, than the first item being compare could be placed BEFORE “Less” or AFTER “Less”.

“I have MORE basketball cards THAN baseball cards”. (the first item “basketball cards” is placed AFTER “more”.)

“I have MORE Basketball cards THAN Rick has”. (the first item “I have” is placed BEFORE “more”.)

Are both sentences above correct?

RC Question:

There are two types of RC question: main point question and detail question. The detail question stem has clues that tell you the location of the proof in the passage. However, what if the question stem doesn’t give you any clue? ( ie: OG16 RC 10 and RC 18). What is the best approach to this type of problem? Do you try to disapprove each answer choice one at a time by looking for proof in the passage AFTER reading each answer choice?

Thank you.

sam, you've been on this forum for 4 years. you know that this isn't the proper way to post questions.

a question here should be about a single concept. if you are asking about different concepts, then those concepts need to be split up into different questions.

also, the questions need to be posted in the appropriate folder(s). if the original stimulus item(s) are in the strategy guides, then the question belongs in the MPrep non-CAT verbal folder.

...and, SC and RC in the same post? did that really happen?
