SC - intended meaning of the original sentence

by MichaelZ337 Thu Apr 16, 2015 7:38 pm

Hi Ron

I am really confused about the so-called intended meaning of the original sentence (Choice A). I've got dividing opinions from different sources.

Some teachers said that if the meaning of Choice A is reasonable, then any variation in meaning in other choices is wrong. This method, if true, will accelerate the speed for sure. But I tend to believe that there is nothing special about Choice A, but I am not quite sure about this. May I seek your confirmation?

Thank you!

there is nothing "special" about choice A.

in theory, the problems could just be presented with a big blank where the underline currently appears. however, GMAC inserts the text of one answer choice into the underline, as a way to help you understand the sentence.
(try replacing the underline with a blank, and see how much harder it will be to understand the intended meaning.)

the point is, basically, that some answer choice has to go there. choice A is a random choice, just like the others.

in terms of meaning, there are basically two possibilities:

* reasonable/logical/sensible meaning
* absurd/illogical/farfetched/self-contradictory meaning

keep the former. throw out the latter. meaning should NOT be judged with reference to other answer choices.
