SC Parallelism - Ellipse

by mww7786 Mon Apr 16, 2007 7:54 pm

Hello Andrew, 8)

Are there more parallel questions available for practice? I still missed six questions in Chapter 6 on the homework. Also, I was just curious about the below two topics and how they relate to GMAT, looking for more coverage.

Parallelism: 2 topics? (open ended)
1. Inappropriately eliminating prepositions?

vs.

2. When is use of Ellipse sentence structure not allowed? (in light of inappropriate word elimination)

To answer these questions:

Are there more parallel questions available for practice?

-- In addition to the Strategy Guide (both In-Action and OG questions) and our online SC Question Bank, we have many parallelism problems in our CAT.

Parallelism: 2 topics? (open ended)

-- It's generally easier to answer specific questions, by the way! I'm not sure how to answer these questions below because they're not phrased as complete sentences, but I'll do my best.

1. Inappropriately eliminating prepositions?

-- You should generally try to keep prepositions across parallel structures. There is no absolute rule, but the more separated the sentence elements are, the more you should try to repeat any preposition as a signal as to what is meant to be parallel.

vs.

2. When is use of Ellipse sentence structure not allowed? (in light of inappropriate word elimination)

-- It's all about resolving ambiguity. "I like cheese more than my mother" is an ambiguous sentence -- so you must say "I like cheese more than my mother DOES" (if that's what you mean) or "I like cheese more than I do my mother" (if THAT's what you mean).

Hope this is helpful.
