SC parallelism: SC guide - pg 63, q 8

by prepp Sat Nov 03, 2012 8:57 pm

The students did poorly on the test more because they had not studied than the material was difficult.

The answer is:

The students did poorly on the test more because they had not studied than because the material was difficult.

Shouldn't it read as:

The students did poorly on the test more because they had not studied than because they didn't understand the material was difficult.

They had not studied is a clause and usually don't parallel clauses need to begin with the same word?

Thanks!

usually don't parallel clauses need to begin with the same word??

i think it is not necessary , from where did u get this rule?
i think the rule is if there is a clause it can be made parallel with another clause but necessarily the same word.

note on pg 57 of the guide:
Two parallel clauses begin with the same subordinators

I want to retire to a place WHERE I can relax and WHERE I pay low taxes.

Similarly the sentence quoted earlier must follow suite.

so it already folowing suite with the word "because"
which makes it parallel , not the subject in clause.

Hope you understand

the WORDS themselves don't have to be parallel; you just need to make sure you're dealing with the same TYPES of words..

Thanks Tim. Can you please further explain this with examples?

In example,

The students did poorly on the test more because they had not studied than because the material was difficult.

The highlighted parts are parallel. Both start with 'because' and both have clause (Subject and Verb) after 'because'.

actually what i'm trying to say is the words do NOT have to be the same! as long as you have the same TYPE of words, that's what matters. if you want examples, look at about 95% of all parallelism sentences ever, where you will see that the words are not exactly the same words..
