you shouldn't actually have to track the splits themselves, because you should only be looking at ONE split at a time.
instead, just do the following:
* make an A-B-C-D-E chart on your yellow pad. vertical is best, because the answer choices are, after all, arranged vertically.
better yet, make a grid before the beginning of the verbal section: A-B-C-D-E down the left-hand side, 1-2-3-4-...-40-41 across the top.
* look at exactly ONE split at a time
* X out the incorrect answers on your grid/chart
* on the next split, look only at the remaining choices
* repeat until you've isolated an answer and/or you are stuck and need to guess.

if you're getting confused, that may be because you're trying to track too many things at once. remember that you're just supposed to be eliminating choices based on one split at a time - not tracking all the splits simultaneously like some overstressed air-traffic controller.
