SC verb tense parallelism

I came across this sentence during a GMAT study group (got this question on a piece of paper so not sure where it's from) and want to understand (1) why the sentence is wrong due to verb tense parallelism and (2) what would be the correct parallel structure. Thanks in advance for your explanation!

also, most importantly, you should never use questions from unknown sources in your preparation. there are a lot of really bad sources out there, and not many good ones.
