SC: We live in a world in which crime is rampant

by soaringAlone Wed Mar 14, 2012 1:22 am

We live in a world in which crime is rampant, children are recalcitrant, change is the only constant, and uncertainty prevails.

(A) children are recalcitrant, change is the only constant, and uncertainty prevails.
(B) children are recalcitrant, change is the only constant, and uncertainty is prevalent.
(C) in which children are recalcitrant, in which change is the only constant, and in which uncertainty is prevalent.
(D) where children are recalcitrant, where change is the only constant and where uncertainty is prevalent.
(E) where children are recalcitrant, change is the only constant, and uncertainty is prevalent

I found it quite clear and nailed it down to B However OA is C. Can anyone explain how ?

B is very close but not the correct one because of its disconnectivity with the initial sentence.

Actually there are four elements that needs to be in parallel

Crime
Children
Change
uncertainity

in which is already a common element that is with the initial element crime ,so if this common element is not present in the four elements then this sentence is not the correct one

The B option could have been correct if there were only 2 more elements apart from crime and in that case in which can be used either ways

in which (Crime ,children and unct.) or (in which crime,in which children and in which uncertainity.)

undoubtedly its a nice question
Please feel free to ask again for more doubts

How do I decide that 'in which' is part of the first element ? For all that matters it could be taken as a common element. Would a comma after 'in which' in Option B make it correct ?

We live in a world in which, crime is rampant, children are recalcitrant, change is the only constant, and uncertainty is prevalent .

I will still go with option B. Although, nothing is wrong with Option C, it is just on the basis of wordiness i will strike out C and vote in favour of B. Gramatically, i think both option B and option C are correct.

weird one, but this is how I see it.

We live in a world in which crime is rampant, children are recalcitrant, change is the only constant, and uncertainty prevails.

but in which is FUNCTIONING as below

"We live in a world which crime is rampant in"

So, assuming that, each element would require the preposition at the end..

"We live in a world which crime is rampant in, children are recalcitrant in, etc."

that option doesn't exist and in fact no option other than C exists with the preposition tagged on the end.

this is weird and i'm really surprised there was no mention of this in the guide. Though the guide did mention the preposition + which construct.

there is nothing wrong with either B or C, and as such the question is fundamentally flawed. please understand that using practice questions from dubious sources can actually hurt your performance, and be careful which problem sources you use..
