Scoring for IR

by shuo.zhang.us Wed Jun 27, 2012 4:50 pm

If the IR section has 12 questions how is our 1-8 score calculated? When doing practice exams, if I get 7/12 questions correct for example, how should I translate that into a 1-8 score?

Thanks.

That will be difficult for anyone to answer. As GMAC had declared earlier that the percentile scores for IR will be updated every month for the first year. From next year they will be updating that once every year.

You can read more about it http://www.manhattangmat.com/blog/index.php/2012/06/26/manhattan-gmats-analysis-of-gmacs-newly-released-integrated-reasoning-percentile-rankings/

I'm not asking about the percentiles (understand those will change over time), I'm just asking about how the raw numerical 1-8 score is calculated, when there's 12 questions.

they haven't given too much information about that yet, but it's probably not a simple formula at all -- it's probably some huge complicated thing that takes specific questions into account, just as in the case of the quant and verbal scores.

Thanks Ron, that's what I figured. It's just difficult to gauge whether I need to prepare more for IR since, on all the practice tests, I am told the # correct out of 12, but are never assigned a 1-8 score.

yeah it's a shame, but unfortunately no one has enough data yet to be sure..

Also a shame that the IR has to be before the 800-score section rather than after it. But I digress.

i agree. the original documentation on the GMAT's website indicated IR would be after verbal, but it sounds like this has changed..
