Sentence Correct Strategy Guide: Modifier Questions

by fnun507 Sun Dec 20, 2015 12:58 am

I have some questions about the Problem Set of Chapter#4 of Sentence Correct Strategy Guide : MGMAT.

1. Other than what is given in the solution for these problems are these variations also correct:
Q3. Ravaged by civil war....Portugal, Angola, which is now ....stories, has an economy that grew by 21% last year, and its parliamentary elections ....week.

Q9. James was unaccustomed to the rigors of college life, so his grades dropped?

2.In solution of question 5, why relative pronoun "where" is not used after all Bordeaux is a place, wouldn't that be more appropriate than using "whose".

So is my variation correct? Well informed people know that Bordeaux is a French region, where most famous export is the wine that bears its name?

[For future reference, questions from our strategy guides should go in the Manhattan Prep GMAT Non-CAT Verbal section of the forum.]

In general, it is usually a very bad idea to try to create your own correct examples (or corrections of existing examples), because at its heart sentence correction is not about correcting anything! Remember, the best approach to SC is to focus on finding mistakes, so it is useless to be able to tell (and a big waste of time to try to test) whether something is correct.

That said, your versions of Q3 and Q9 are just fine. However, your version of Q5 is not correct; in fact, it underscores exactly why we might choose to use "whose" rather than "where" in such a sentence. To try to shoehorn "where" into that sentence is awkward and difficult to accomplish (specifically, it cannot be used as a simple replacement for "whose"). Please note what the book said about the acceptability of using "whose" in such a situation, and keep in mind that your job is not to find a *better* sentence or even a correct one, but rather just to identify mistakes if and when they occur.
