Sentence Correction Doubt

by i.gourabdeb Mon Apr 22, 2013 8:58 pm

I have some doubts on the explanation of the Sentence Correction Questions # 26 & 29 as present in the GMAT Official Review (OG) 13th Edition.

For question 29, the correct answer, as given in OG 13th Edition, is E. However this option has a 'which' modifier which does not touch the noun it is modifying.

For Ques. 26, there are semicolons which separates only phrases. I always thought that semicolons can separate complete sentences which are related to one another.
Is this Ques. some kind of an exception to the semicolon rule?

Cant discuss OG questions on these forums but fortunately question 29 is also a GMATPrep question so you can find some explanation here:

Also, Ron has done a session dated 25th August 2011 on how which modifiers work. Worth seeing that:

I cant discuss OG26 but I will point you to MGMAT SC guide, Odds and Ends chapter. On the 4th edition its pg191. You will find your doubt cleared there if you have the book.

Messi, you are awesome. Thanks for pointing out those links.

i.gourabdeb, just to explain the rule of semicolons within lists (w/o referencing the problem), you are allowed to use this punctuation in place of commas if commas are already used within the list of items, especially when it helps to clarify the end of each item in the list.

I liked traveling to Brazil, Peru, and Chile; eating in Greece, Italy, and Egypt; and living in China, Japan, and India.
