sentence correction

by ankurtayal.84 Sat Apr 07, 2012 1:34 am

Out of the public's interest in the details of and conflicts in other people's lives have grown a booming market for "reality" television shows, which are bringing "regular" people onto the television screen with increasing frequency.

(A) other people's lives have grown a market for "reality" television shows, which are bringing
(B) other people's lives has grown a booming market for "reality" television shows, which are bringing
(C) another person's life has grown a booming market for a "reality" television show, which is bringing
(D) other people's lives has grown a booming market for "reality" television shows, which is bringing
(E) other people's lives has grown a booming market for "reality" television shows, which bring

OA is (D), but "which should modify the noun just before it not the entire clause so, according to me the ans should be (B)...what is the point i am missing???

As per the forum rules, we need a verifiable source for the problem before we can deal with this question. If the question is not one of ours or one that is copyright-free, we will have to delete the question..

(E) other people's lives has grown a booming market for "reality" television shows, which bring

Here is my take on it.

A) have is wrong here as the noun for this verb i singular, public interest
B)here has has been corrected but are is a plural verb modifying market which is singular.
C)wrong
D)correct, has and bringing are in agreement with their respective nouns.
E)bring is plural verb for singular market

this question is blatantly ripped off from the OG (116 from the 11th edition to be exact). they didn't even bother to rearrange the answer choices! might as well stick to the real thing. :)

In the options, I do not understand why it should be "which is bringing" instead of "which are bringing".

"Which" modifies the noun just before the comma, and in this question, "reality shows" is just before the comma.

Option D says "which are bringing" and is correct. Why?

is in "which is bringing" refers to interest which is singular and hence is.

I understand the subject is "market", but I'm still not convinced about the usage of "which" in the sentence.

The word "which" always modifies the noun before the comma.
So technically it should modify "television shows". The sentence makes sense in either case.

@ Tim Sanders - Sir this question is different from the one in OG XI question 116.

for the most part, if you want to see how this one is done, look up the answer for OG 116 in the 11th edition, which is the question this one was plagiarized from. the major topical difference between the two is the use of "which", and arjun is correct that "which" will refer to the first eligible noun before the comma..

I read in one of ron's reply on this forum

x of y, which--> if which can stand for y then it refers to y

if it cannot then it refers to X
