A) nine saints often described to be coming from syria, only two or three came from there

B) nine saints are often described as coming from syria, but only two or three came from there

C) nine saints is often described to be coming from syria, though only two or three came from there

D) nine saints, often described as coming from syria, but only two or three came from there

E) nine saints, who are often described as coming from syria, only two or three came from there

OA is B, but here the subject is "a group of...." so the verb sould be singular. how this is correct. i arrrived at C as answer.

Ankur,

According to me "the nine saints" are representing "group of Missionaries", which is mentioned in the previous part of sentence. The later part of sentence "often described to be coming from syria, only two or three came from there", is describing about the "nine saints" rather than "group of missionaries". Therefore a plural should be used.

You can also see that sentence mentions in later part that " only two or three came from there"- which gives us idea that plural should be used.
