sentenses with same structure

Manhattan Instructures,

Can you clarify the confusion why sentenses with same structure are correct and incorrect as under?

1. Jose's room is so messy that HIS mother calls HIM a pig.......incorrect
2. The manager's obstinate and surly attitude prevented his staff from befriending him......... correct
