Service activities

by byucoakley Thu Jan 21, 2010 1:24 pm

A couple nights ago I listened to the seminar on long-term planning by mbaMission. After it finished, I decided that I was going to start volunteering tomorrow. Since I am currently living in the area where I grew up, I signed up to volunteer at the middle school and high school that I attended. I chose these schools for two reasons: 1) the report card rating by the school district for each school was either satisfactory or needs improvement and 2) this is an opportunity for me to give back to the schools that contributed to my education. When I am volunteering at these schools, what things should I be doing or what characteristics should I be improving upon? Thanks.

Thank you for attending one of our events! And it's nice to see that you took the message to heart by getting more involved in organizations that are important to you. My advice would be to look for as many opportunities to stay involved. If you see that a process can be improved, take the lead and make it happen. If you see an opportunity to start a new initiative, go ahead and spearhead that initiative. Many people start off as volunteers in an organization and then later on, they find opportunities to take on greater leadership roles. So be open to taking on greater roles with the schools. Don't just be content with your initial volunteer duties!
