"Spectacularly" modifying adjective or noun ?

by Aquamarine Tue Oct 09, 2012 7:08 pm

The sentence correction book, modifier chapter has this statement in its problem set :

"Upon setting foot in the Gothic cathedral, the spectacularly stained-glass windows amazed the camera-wielding tourists."

It states the following in the answer description : Spectacularly is incorrect because it cannot modify a noun. Spectacularly seems to modify stained. However stained-glass is a material.

I feel that stained-glass in the sentence is acting as an adjective because it is modifying windows. If that is true, it would be ok for spectacularly to modify either stained or stained-glass ... Right ?

Thanks !

"stained-glass" is an adjective. "spectacularly" is technically modifying "stained-glass", which is the problem because this is absurd. what if i said it was an Anderson window (i think that's a type of window)? would it make sense to talk about a "spectacularly Anderson" window? not all adverbs can modify all adjectives..

Hi,

I have another doubt regarding this question.

while attempting this question, i came up with the following solution:

"Upon setting foot in the Gothic cathedral, the camera-wielding tourists were amazed by the spectacular stained-glass windows"

Can we consider this as equally good solution compared to one provided in the book.If not, why?

sure, but remember your job on SC is not to come up with a correct sentence (despite the name!). your job is to find errors and eliminate them. so any effort you spend trying to come up with alternate versions of correct sentences is likely to be wasted study time..
