Subject of the sentence....

by vishal1702 Fri Aug 14, 2009 5:45 am

Came across the following in the Manhattan SC book
Problem Set Question of Subject-verb Agreement chapter:

After all the gardening, the sun shining on the flowerbeds make a beautiful sight.

The answer to the above question states that verb should be 'makes' instead of 'make'.....agreed

But the subject stated is 'the sun'...
Can some1 explain the reasoning behind choosing 'the sun' and not 'the sun shining on the flowerbeds' as the subject??

"shining on the flowerbeds" is a modifier.
... as is ANY "-ing" construction that comes as part of "the NOUN VERBing". if you have "a/an/the NOUN VERBing", that is just a noun phrase in which everything except the NOUN is a modifier.

modifiers can't be subjects, so, there you go.
