subject verb agreement- mgmat sc guide example

Can you please explain why sentence 2 is wrong but sentence 1, which is similar to sentence 2 , is correct.

1) Stoney NAMED the electron in 1894.

2) A venomous snake designated the emblem of the rebellion by the insurgency.


Both the sentences have subjects that agree in number "Stoney" in 1 and " venomous snake" in 2 and past participles "named" in 1 and "designated" in 2 but sentence 2 is wrong

What about this sentence 3:

The Japanese medal given for bravery.

Is it correct? I see Japanese medal as subject and given as verb. Looks fine to me. But the book says it is wrong.

It's the same grammatical issue, so read that first, and if you still don't get it, give some more specifics here.

Hi,

I still didn't get it. Although I got that in the post in the link you gave was/has been is needed because the sentence is using passive voice.

But in sentences 2 and 3 it doesn't seems that passive voice is being used.

2) A venomous snake designated the emblem of the rebellion by the insurgency.

3) The Japanese medal given for bravery.

No passive voice indicator like by, having is used.

From this and other posts you have made, it looks like you need to develop a better understanding of active and passive voice, as well as an understanding of who is doing what in the sentences. Go back to your examples and tell us who is doing what, and you should be able to see easily which sentences make sense and which don't.
