* That vs V-ing modifier?

by duyng9989 Tue Jul 02, 2013 1:35 am

I have a question:

In these two sentences:

In the simple ballads, such as We Are Seven, and the lyrical meditation of Tintern Abbey, Wordsworth achieves an interplay, between nature and the imagination that explores both the external world of sensory experience and the internal workings of the mind in contemplation.

The blue part is said to modify "an interplay". I dont understand why THAT modifier here does not modify the Imagination?

In constrast this version:

In the simple ballads, such as We Are Seven, and the lyrical meditation of Tintern Abbey, Wordsworth achieves an interplay, between nature and the imagination EXPLORING both the external world of sensory experience and the internal workings of the mind in contemplation.

"Exploring ... " is said to modify imagination.

Why is that?

Thank you

Sorry.

I got the question from e-GMAT. Please delete the post if it violates the rule. I get confused with their explanation so I came to ask you :). They said that the question need to be revised.

Thank you.

This is why rule #1 when studying from the GMAT is to try to stick with OG questions/rules. There's a ton of great resources out there that are helpful, but those questions aren't going through the same rigorous testing that you'll find in OG problems. In fact, a Google search for this sentence, brings up the quote from a book that actually uses "that" rather than their corrected version. (http://books.google.com/books?id=bdtJx5 ... n.&f=false)

So the minor takeaway- the sentence is probably ok (although they do change some other things too). The major takeaway is to learn your rules from the OG.
