that vs which?

by gmatwork Tue Jan 17, 2012 12:19 am

Usage of 'that' and 'which' in the clause that acts as a modifier - 'which' clause modifies the noun right before (in some exceptions modifies noun + prepositional phrase)

Does the essential modifier starting with 'that' also modify the noun right before in all instances or it can modify modify the whole clause/phrase before the essential modifier?

In one of your posts you had mentioned that 'that' has some flexibility and 'which' does not?

"that" has many constructions that can intervene; check out Ron's post here: although-at-one-time-children-s-programming-had-been-t2128-15.html

"which" should touch the noun it is modifying unless there is an essential noun modifier between the noun and the "which". Check out Ben's post in this thread: tricky-sc-please-help-t7286.html
