that X and that Y

by oodlu Tue Apr 26, 2011 7:44 pm

Hi. I have a question on the ...that X and that Y... construction.

Do we always follow the "and" with another "that" to keep the sentence parallel or are there cases when you don't need a second "that"?

For example:

ex #1:
I found out that the shirt I want is on sale and that it comes in 2 colors.
(vs)
I found out that the shirt I want is on sale and it comes in 2 colors.

ex #2:
Mary concluded that Jerry is boring and that she will dump him.
(vs)
Mary concluded that Jerry is boring and she will dump him.

I saw in OG 12, SC-80 that the answer said 'D' was wrong because there was not a "that" following "and".

Also, I saw in OG 12, SC-128 that one reason 'E' is right is there is a "that" following "and". Answer 'D', meanwhile, does not have a "that" following "and" and is therefore wrong.

in most cases it is okay to use the "that" or not. however, in SC80 the problem with omitting "that" is that it creates confusion regarding the meaning of the sentence..
