The commission acknowledged - Amount & Amounts Difference

by umang.gmat Sat Jul 21, 2012 7:23 am

The commission acknowledged that no amount of money or staff members can ensure the safety of people who
live in the vicinity of a nuclear plant, but it approved the installation because it believed that all reasonable
precautions had been taken.
(A) no amount of money or staff members
(B) neither vast amounts of money nor staff members
(C) neither vast amounts of money nor numbers of staff members
(D) neither vast amounts of money nor a large staff
(E) no matter how large the staff or how vast the amount of money

Please give explanations for the answers. The OA is D
Expert comments please

Cheers!!!

The source of the question is http://gmatclub.com/forum/the-commissio ... 79545.html

Choice A is wrong because amount only modifies money and not staff members
Choice B - Same reason
Choice C - It should be number of staff members
Choice E - Verbose and grammatically incorrect when put in the sentence

I am not convinced with D as the choice because amounts of money is a wrong usage. It should be amount of money.

Cheers!!!

well, you've eliminated the four wrong answers, so D must be correct. there is nothing inherently wrong with "amounts of money" in the right context..
