the difference between IN WHICH and WHERE in SC

by Crack GMAT750 Thu Aug 24, 2017 9:54 pm

I am doing sentence correction now, and confused about the difference between in which and where. Is the difference between them whether there is an antecedent (preposition)?

Both introduce modifiers—but where is pretty exclusively used for physical / geographic locations. If that modifier isn't referring to an actual place—don't use where. If the other option in the choices is in which, choose an option that has that wording. (For the most part, everybody says where in the real world now, so in which probably sounds funny to you. But that's really what it's supposed to be unless it's talking about a place!)

There can be a difference of meaning between those two idioms. Check out Appendix A in the SC strategy guide. Also, try not to spend too much time asking hypothetical questions about grammar - do you have a specific example of a question that uses those idioms?
