the effects of the divorce occurring

by manhhiep2509 Sat Dec 28, 2013 5:07 am

This is the choice A of question 33 in verbal review 2.
I modified it so that I do not violate the rule.

Adam and Eva have still suffer the effects of the divorce occurring when a child

I eliminate the choice because I think that "when a child" is not correct. I expect that "when" be followed by "a clause".

However, the OG explanation does not mention that. Instead, it says "(1) The phrasing implies that the young men and women had divorced in childhood. (2) The word child does not agree with the plural antecedent men and
women."

Please clarify about "when a child" and the illogical meaning the OG explanation mentions.
------
sometime I see that "although" can be correctly used in this way:
although doing/done xxxx, John does yyyy.
(question 36 in review verbal 2)

if "when", "while", "even though", etc. are used in this way, is it incorrect?

----
This is the choice E

"Adam and Eva have still suffer the effects of the divorce that has occurred as each was a child"

What is wrong with "each"? I think that each refers to Adam or Eva.

Thank you.

As far as I know, "when a/an (noun)" is not acceptable.

Do note that it's possible to use an adjective (or equivalent) like that, though. When happy, dogs will often try to lick people; when threatened, they may bite.

In that sentence "each" would work (although it's a little weird), but it only works because Adam and Eva are singular. The original sentence doesn't have singular nouns in those places.
