the role of present participle on page 252 Manhattan

by rreewwq1 Wed Aug 08, 2012 8:10 am

Hi GMAT instructor,

There is a sentence at the bottom of page 253.

Having broken the lamp, she has been worrying all night.

Can yo tell me the role of having here? Thanks

"Having broken the lamp" modifies she. "having" is the present participle of helping word "have" without actual meaning.

PS: can linking verb (be) be paralleled with working verb? Thanks

Hi tim,

Another question. When -ing form used as adjective to modify a noun. There must be no comma between the v-ing and the noun modified, right? If there is a comma between these two, -ing form can only be used as adverb.

Thanks

Here are the rules.

Verb+ING modifier preceded by comma can only modify preceding clause.

Verb+ING modifier without comma can only modify preceding NOUN.

Hope, I am making some sense.

if the ____ing form follows a clause, then yes; otherwise, no.

if the ____ing form (with a comma) follows only a noun, then it can describe that noun.
e.g.
james, screaming at the top of his lungs, was unable to attract the attention of the police.
--> correct sentence. here, "screaming..." just modifies james.

if you do this sort of thing, you're actually delaying our response to your question.

we answer the posts in chronological order from oldest to newest. if you "bump" the thread by posting something like this, you've just moved it to last place in the queue.

Hi,

I was trying to make sense of the having+past participle construction (which apparently is called perfect participle) but I don't seem to have this construction or the phrase "Having broken the lamp, she has been worrying all night." in my version of MHGMAT Sentence Correction Strategy Guide (I have the sixth edition, in the ebook format, so I don't know exactly what page 252 corresponds to)

Was this topic removed from later versions of the strategy guide?
How can I find more information on this topic (perfect participles)?

This looks like one of the sections we removed from the latest editions (I can't find that example either in my 5th or 6th editions), probably because it was causing more confusion than good.

It's easy to be bamboozled by grammatical terms and feel that you have to master them to do well on GMAT. Luckily, it's not the case! Think of these two sentences:

1. Running round the park, Stacey breathed heavily.
2. Having run round the park, Stacey felt satisfied.

Both the bold parts are modifiers. In the first case (present participle) the running and the breathing happened at the same time. In the second (perfect participle), the running happened first. I encourage you to focus more on meaning than grammatical definitions.

Thank you, I have now understood.

Yeah I know I don't have to memorize the grammatical names, but in this case they at least show up on the internet
