the use of EACH as an appositive

by terrace.hoer Mon Dec 03, 2012 10:21 am

Hi:)

How can i explain the structure of the following sentence?

*"The city has many libraries, each library a special building designed by a famous architect."

Why can those two noun phrases("each library" and "a special building") be put together?

I am confused about the use of EACH when it is an appositive.

Thanks in advance:)!

Can you suggest any other position for these two? 'each library' is correctly modifying the 'libraries' and 'a special building' is correctly modifying the 'each library'.

Thanks first!!

Does you mean that 'each library' is an appositive of 'libraries', while 'a special building' is an appositive of 'each library'?

If so, a COMMA is needed after 'each library', like 'libraries, each library, a special building...', isn't it?

Thanks very much!!

Yes, 'each library' is acting as an appositive to 'libraries', (I'm not an expert in grammatical terminology but I will remember it as noun modifier)

Okay, lets see what happens when we add a comma after 'each library'.

The city has many libraries, each library, a special building designed by a famous architect.

I believe comma after 'each library' will act as a closing comma for the 1st comma means 'each library' will become optional in the sentence. Then sentence should make sense without 'each library' but it doesn't if we omit 'each library'. It would then say,

The city has many libraries a special building designed by a famous architect.
which makes no sense to me.

Also, even without comma after 'each library' sentence makes clear sense to me. The part 'a special building' is clearly modifying 'each library'.

Experts please?
