thusdays with ron. Verbal question. (Due to)

by carlosutrillas Sun Jul 21, 2013 2:56 pm

Hi,

I have seen another video from the "thursdays with ron" section (below one)

http://vimeo.com/15391844

There is something Ron explains about "due to" I do not understand.

Ron´s explanation,

The observation deck at the top of the tower was closed due to the construction (It it wrong. One of the explanation Ron gives is there is no noun next to this and it is the incorrect)

I understand that. However, later on he gives another example...

I was two hours late to the meeting due to the six-mile-long traffic jam, which was due to a brush fire burning on the side of the freeway.

I am interested in the second "due to" andI understand why it is correct. However, if I apply the rule Ron gives before, I think it should be incorrect because there is no noun next to "due to" but rather a verb "was"

I am sorry I am a little bit lost with that.

The word "which" here indicates a relative pronoun that is talking about the noun in front of it (ex: This morning I ate an apple, which (the apple) was red). In this case, that prior noun is the phrase "traffic jam". And it makes 100% sense to say the traffic jam was due to a brush fire.
