Took test, in need of some advice

by t_three Sat Oct 20, 2012 8:25 pm

So my background:
B.S. Computer Engineering GPA 3.4
M.S. Computer Engineering GPA 3.35

For the past 3 1/2 years worked as lead mobile developer for a large company and own my own software company on the side

I'm was shooting to get around 600 total and on my practice test I usually do decent on my quant and respectable on my verbal.

Now to my GMAT dilemma:
I took the test today and got a whopping 39 (88 percentile) on my verbal, this blew me away. But on my quant I somehow got 37 (44 percentile), needless to say it confused me. Anywho I'm already thinking about retaking. I'm not trying to go to a top tier school, the one that I want to go to accepts 600 (didn't see any percentiles they were wanting) but another I was looking at wants 650 (which I'm not to far from) with quant in 65 percentile. Wondering if my strong background will schools be willing to overlook a no show in quant?

Thanks for any advice.

Hi there,

Great question and props for being realistic about your school options. You definitely have a strong tech background, but you have to be careful, as purely tech roles generally don't allow for as much business and leadership exposure as other careers do. Your entrepreneurial experience could be quite interesting, but it really depends on the nature of your success...

I also don't see a lot of extracurriculars or community activities, so that would be a gap.

My opinion is that given your profile, and more importantly, given that you know you can score well in quant, you should retake the test and show them that. Why allow something that is not a weakness appear as one? That wouldn't be a great way to go, if you can avoid it. Plus, they weight quant slightly more than verbal...

Hope this helps!
