Unlike Lions and Tigers

by rescate_bandito Mon Nov 30, 2009 9:54 am

I think its a MGMAT question

Unlike lions and tigers, whose hyoid bones vibrate loosely to create their trademark roars, the hyoid bones of domestic felines do not move and so housecats cannot roar.

A) whose hyoid bones vibrate loosely to create their trademark roars, the hyoid bones of domestic felines

B) whose hyoid bones vibrate loosely to create the cats' trademark roars, domestic felines have hyoid bones that

C) whose hyoid bones vibrate loosely to create the cats' trademark roars, the hyoid bones of domestic felines

D) who have hyoid bones that vibrate loosely to create their trademark roars, domestic felines have hyoid bones that

E) which have loosely vibrating hyoid bones that create their trademark roars, domestic felines have hyoid bones that

Confused between B and D, i picked D......OA is B

ambiguous "their" in D. B fixes it using a generic term cats, which clearly refers to lions and tigers.

Firstly, Don't be so rude! Secondly, read the instructions. You are expected to mention the source clearly.

As far as the answer is concerned, as pointed out earlier, "their" can refer to bones as well as those animals. It's ambiguous.

correct.

also, you don't use the pronoun "who" for anything except human beings, so that also kills (d).
(by contrast, note that "whose" can be used for anything - humans, animals, inanimate objects, you name it)

Ron, on reading this question here, my first instinct rejected options B and D because "vibrate loosely to create" sounded like bones vibrate in order to create that sound. So, I chose E though "their" is ambiguous but then I thought the meaning made it pretty clear. Please help me correct my understanding about it.

thank you very much in advance

you should probably ignore this question entirely, as it has been grossly misquoted from the original and has grammar mistakes even in the non-underlined portion..
