Unlike most severance packages

by s.aamershah Tue Jun 01, 2010 11:20 am

Unlike most severance packages, which require workers to stay until the last day scheduled to collect, workers at the automobile company are eligible for its severance package even if they find a new job before they are terminated.

A) Same as above
B) the last day they are scheduled to collect, workers are eligible for the automobile company's severance package
C) their last scheduled day to collect, the automobile company offers its severance package to workers
D) their last scheduled day in order to collect, the automobile company's severance package is available to workers
E) the last day that they are scheduled to collect, the automobile company's severance package is available to workers

OA is D
I got the question right. I was able to rule out A, B, C because they are not parallel (comparing severance package with workers or automobile company)

My question is: Doesn't D change the meaning?
Their last scheduled day in order to collect implies that workers stay until their last WORKING day in order to collect.

I believe the original meaning was that the workers stay until the last day they are scheduled to collect (a day that could be other than their last working day - example they get fired in March and stop working then but their last scheduled day to collect severance is in June)

if the other four choices are WRONG for some reason, then it really doesn't matter if the one correctly written sentence produces slight changes in meaning. you should only be concerned with such changes if more than one of the sentences is grammatically correct!

it looks as though you have already ruled out choices (a), (b), and (c) for valid reasons.
the reason why choice (e) is incorrect is addressed here:
