Usage of "which"

by jainishsurana Fri Sep 16, 2011 4:25 pm

Hello

Can someone please explain me the usage of the word "which"?

I understand that "which" can be used in the following ways:

1. "which" is supposed to refer to the noun before it.
eg: The shirt, which is blue in colour, is laying on the bed.

2. "X of Y, which.." (as described by Ron in one of his posts)

But how do we justify the usage of the following:

1. I wrote an article on the financial crisis for which I was awarded.

Why is this usage correct? What is the rule for such usage?

Thanks

When "which" follows a preposition, it is used as a standard pronoun, so as long as you can find an antecedent that agrees in number and makes sense this is an acceptable usage of "which"..
