use of comma

by varunmehta.ism Wed Jul 10, 2013 2:35 pm

A local association of artisans and craftsmen has organized a charity fair in which participants sold various products, including jewelry, pottery, and artwork in the hope that the proceeds would amount to the required sum of $50,000.

has organized a charity fair in which participants hoped the proceeds would amount to the required sum of $50,000, which were to be raised by selling various products, including jewelry, pottery, and artwork.

have organized a charity fair whose participants sold various products, including jewelry, pottery, and artwork, hoping the proceeds would amount to the required $50,000

In the above question, why option C is the correct answer?
as without a comma before it, "in the hope" modifies artwork rather than selling products

Hi,
Let me try this with following explanation: ( may not in terms of your query though)

Original sentence -
A local association of artisans and craftsmen has organized a charity fair in which participants sold various products, including jewelry, pottery, and artwork in the hope that the proceeds would amount to the required sum of $50,000.

Option (c) is best because:
1. the comma before '..in the hope..' will create comma spice. If we chopped down the original sentence by ignoring prepositional and other junk, the sentence would look like this-

A local association has organized a charity fair in the hope that the proceeds would amount to the required sum of $50,000.

Also, the word "including" is used here is to list down the three examples of the sold products, so after the third product the remaining part of the sentence should begin without any punctuation mark.

2. the use of 'amount' and 'sum' is redundant. Either amount or sum would be alright. I think so..and in option (c) it is used in more concise way.

Let us wait for the instructor's comment on this.

Thanks.

First, per forum rules, please post the source of any question you post.

Second, I'm assuming this is not from an official resource, because it's bad. You wouldn't use the combination of "has organized" with "sold", unless the selling happened prior to the organization. In this sentence, that's an absurd meaning.
