Use of kept

by ramendra.awesome Fri Mar 21, 2014 2:26 am

Dear Instructors,

I am a little confused regarding use of 'Kept'. Could you please tell me that which below given sentence is correct and why> Are both of them correct?

A) I kept on ignoring him.
B) I kept ignoring him.

Many thanks in advance!

Where'd you get these?

A is very informal. You'll hear it extremely often in the speech of Americans, especially southerners, but it's unacceptable in writing.

B is better, but still informal. You may see it in written English, but it would be better written more formally, e.g., "I continued to ignore him."

Thanks for the explanation, Ron!
You have made it very clear.

This is not exactly related to a question. I encountered it in normal speech. I hope that is not a violation to the rules of this forum :)

It's not a violation; any source that's not on our banned source list, including random hearsay, is fine.

However, you should realize that using spoken English as any kind of proxy for SC is a VERY bad idea. It's certain to have negative returns.
Remember, spoken and written English are two different languages"”with different grammars, different vocabularies, different everything. To go from one to the other, you literally have to translate.
