Use of " that that"

by asad.alikhan Sat Sep 28, 2013 1:49 am

I am sorry if this question seems too open-ended but recently on my exam I came across a SC question with an option containing "that that". I just wanted to know that whether there are some possible constructions which allow using "that" twice ?

It's possible to create a grammatically legitimate construction with "that" occurring twice in a row. In just about every case, though, there's a more compact or clearer way to write the sentence.

I can guarantee you that GMAC will not make a correct SC answer with two "that"s in a row. Not going to happen. Since this is a GMAT forum, then, there's not much point in providing examples.

On the other hand, you should be familiar with "had had", which is just a normal verb. It's in the same tense as had driven, had given, had done, and so on.
That could very possibly appear in a correct answer from GMAC.
