Verbal Score is Killing Me

by GK Wed Jan 09, 2008 11:49 am

Can you tell me how I can improve my verbal score? I took an online test right now and scored 39 (I feel pathetic about it). My usual range has been b/w 41-44 though I've had a few repeats every time which means all these scores are inflated. I always get 2-4 RC's wrong and 2-4 SC's wrong :(

I've been preparing for a bit and I have spent a lot of time on SC's so seeing this kind of a score is killing me. I'll be very happy if I get 41-43 in Verbal though at the rate I'm going, this doesn't seem very possible. I get 6-8 questions wrong each time. My test is in 6 days so I'm afraid I might be a little late in seeking your advice :(

Any tips will be greatly appreciated.[/b]

Hi - I'm confused. Is there a typo in your post? You said you scored 39 on verbal and think that's "pathetic" but 39 is about the 89th percentile. Or did you mean you scored in the 39th percentile? Or is 39 itself a typo?

Second, you are always going to see at least 6-8 questions wrong each time - in fact, on the real test, you should expect to get something like half of the questions wrong, unless you are scoring in the 90+ percentile range (in which case maybe you'll get only a quarter of the questions wrong or something like that). The test is not scored based upon percentage correct; it's scored based upon the difficulty levels of the questions answered. So no matter how good you get, the test will just give you harder questions and you'll still have a lot wrong.

Finally, yes, 6 days is a little... late. First, reply and tell us what's going on with that 39 number. Second, give us a LOT more detail about your strengths and weaknesses - and don't just focus on percentage correct. How's your timing for the different question types? What are your percentages like for easier vs. harder questions within those types? For SC, what are your percentages and your timing for the different content areas (eg, pronouns, modifiers, etc.). We may be able to give you a few tips but, again, there's not a lot that anyone can do in just 6 days (and fewer, by the time you reply and we reply again)...
