what does "between" actually mean in GMAT quant?

by rkafc81 Tue Nov 27, 2012 3:39 pm

hi all

this is apparently a basic question yet the word between seems to be a bit ambiguous in GMAT math (plus i don't have a math background).

what does the word "between" actually mean in GMAT quant?

e.g. how many integers are between 7 and 11 ?
7 8 9 10 11

is it inclusive of (e.g. 7,8,9,10,11) or exclusive of (e.g. 8,9,10) the endpoints?

thanks

Hi,
"between" means exclusive of the endpoints. So in your example, the integers "between" 7 and 11 include 8, 9, and 10. :-)

ya.
if they mean inclusive, they'll have to say "inclusive".
e.g.
How many integers are between 7 and 11 inclusive?
--> five
How many integers are between 7 and 11?
--> three

(this is also why you'll never see "between xxxxx and xxxx exclusive" -- because that's already implied by default.)
