whats the difference between these two

1) Pregnant women who are often more sensitive to the taste of chocolate and "the" smell of tuna fish

2) Pregnant women who are often more sensitive to the taste of chocolate and smell of tuna fish

What role "the " is playing ..

Its a matter of parallelism . Pregnant women are sensitive towards two things ,and those two things should be in parallel .
One is - The taste of chocolate and the 2nd is
the smell of tuna fish .

Nice, prana. Yes, we need to include the article "the" to make these two items parallel: "the taste" and "the smell".
