"WHICH" - PlS HELP !!

by supshalu Sun Aug 09, 2009 12:27 pm

Analysts blamed May's sluggish retail sales on unexciting merchandise as well as the weather, colder and wetter than was usual in some regions, which slowed sales of barbecue grills and lawn furniture.
(A) colder and wetter than was usual in some regions, which slowed
(B) which was colder and wetter than usual in some regions, slowing
(C) since it was colder and wetter than usually in some regions, which slowed
(D) being colder and wetter than usually in some regions, slowing
(E) having been colder and wetter than was usual in some regions and slowed

B is the answer choice.

Ron/Satcey,
As per your explanation on some thread that in sentence type "X of Y,which"
Which may refer either to X or to Y.

Shouldnt here "which" indicate that it's referring to RETAIL SALES as against WEATHER. However the official explanation is WHICH refers to a noun preceding it , Therefore, WEATHER is modified by WHICH

PLS EXPLAIN, I am having a tough time identifying the "WHICH" effects///

i don't really understand your question.
it sounds as though you're saying that "which" should refer to the retail sales. if you look at the context, though - "which was colder and wetter..." - it's absolutely clear that "which" must refer to the weather. (i.e., retail sales can't be cold or wet)

Can you please explain why option "A" is incorrect?

Hi,

I know the correct answer is B, but my understanding is "slowing..." as a participial phrase modifies the entire main clause - "Analysts blamed...". That means analysts blame is the cause of slowing of sales. Or, is the participial phrase selectively modifying a part of the main clause? If so, could you please help me in a systemic way of identifying the noun modified by the participial phrase.

I don't know whether this is from GMATPrep but I've seen this in OG10, Q253. Anyhow,

Verb+ING modifiers can do the two things,

1. Describe the whole clause,

2. Present the result/effect of clause.

I don't think there is any particular NOUN that is described by participle phrase, here ING verb "slowing" describes the effects of the "colder and wetter weather."
I Can. I Will.
