Is it because the discovery can't be the large creature whose fossils resemble a fish n an animal?

Correct. What is "Hailed as a key discovery in the science of evolution"? Was it the creature itself that was discovered? No, just its fossils.

This is a very common way the GMAT tests modifiers . . . a long descriptive phrase starting the sentence followed by a comma. Make sure that the noun after the comma is what is actually described by that phrase.

Hi Ron,

What is exactly 'resembling' modifying,
The fossils or the large scaly creature.??
because ing modifier without comma must modify the noun before it, it should modify creature.RIght?

And please can you tell me Why is option E is wrong. Is it because of resemble??

Thanks,

You're completely right about the modifier.

Would you mind reposting the text of answer choice E here? It'd help us to have a copy of it in the thread. :)
