Who vs Whom

by cumulonimbus Fri Nov 09, 2012 2:56 am

Noun Modifier with relative pronouns:
As per MGMAT guide Ch. 6 Pg - 87.

"Who" is as the subject of the verb in the relative clause, whereas 'whom' is used as the object of the verb or of a preposition.

There after two examples are given:
Wrong: The security guard WHO we met was nice.
Right: The security guard WHOM we met was nice.

In these sentences is We the subject and 'The security guard' the object ?
If so then I can make sense of the rule given in the guide.

Please tel f my understanding is correct.

You are right with "we" being the subject. Notice what is written in the SC guide

"Who" is as the subject of the verb in the relative clause

we have to look for subject and object in the relative clause only.

Now, let's see the both examples one by one.

Wrong: The security guard WHO we met was nice.

look into the HIGHLIGHTED part only.

Subject - We
Verb - met

then here WHOM is required because 'whom' is used as the object of the verb or of a preposition.

Right: The security guard WHOM we met was nice.

I will offer job to the boy whom I interviewed last week.

Subject - I
Verb - interviewed

so WHOM is correct here and is working as object.

let's see another example -

I will offer job to the boy who works in my office.

Subject - Who
Verb - works

who refers correctly to boy.

Okay, our whole focus should be on the relative clause.

I hope I am making some sense. In case I am wrong please correct me.

Great job Willy!

They way I think of it is to replace the "who" with "he" (vowels at the end) and replace the "whom" with "him" (m at the end), and then switch around the word order and genders as necessary to create a sentence. Then ask which one makes sense:

who we met -> he we met -> we met he (obviously wrong)
whom we met -> him we met -> we met him (totally fine)

if this helps and makes total sense to you, feel free to use it. if not, just ignore this advice.. :)
