I know that whom can only modify people, but is this also the case for whom?

First, please accept our apologies for the late response. A tech glitch hid this folder from all logged-in Manhattan Prep staff for the first quarter of the year, and I’m still digging through the backlog.

Yes, both "who" and "whom" are reserved for people or possibly named animals (pets, fictional characters, etc.)

The exception is "whose," which can be used for things:
The table, whose leg has been uneven for years, wobbles every time it is used.

I think the reason for this exception is that there is no possessive version of "which" or "that."
