Wording a sentence

by karenshushang Wed Sep 26, 2012 8:34 pm

The administration has increased the number of fines for mining safety violations as part of their campaign to protect miners.

a. has increased the number of fines for mining safety violations as part of their

b. have increased the number of fines for mining safety violations as part of their

c. has increased the number of fines for mining safety violations as part of its

d. has increased the amount of fines for mining safety violations as part of its

e. have increased the amount of fines for mining safety violations as part of their

Correct answer: c
I mistakenly chose answer (d) thinking the sentence meant to say the dollar amount of the fines has increased instead of the number of fines. I can understand why choice (c) is the correct answer. However, what would be the grammatically correct way to word the sentence to say that the dollar amount has increased? Thank you.

perhaps you could say "the amount of money collected through fines". in general, you should not try to *correct* sentences (despite the fact that these are called "sentence correction"!), but rather just understand why the wrong answers are wrong..
