Would 660 score + 11 exp help in getting thru a good school

by ani.ghosh.cal Fri Aug 05, 2011 12:20 pm

Hi,
The GMAT score 660 (Q-48,V-33) was a bit disappointing for me as I had been scoring around 700 in the practice tests. In general I am good at English but somehow I slumped when it mattered the most.Nevertheless just wanted to know whether this would permit a reasonable try to a good MBA school.
Incidentally,it might worth mentioning that I have 10+ yrs of IT consulting experience in Asia's largest software company.
Kindly advise.

Thanks,

AG

Hi AG,

Thanks for writing in. GMAT is just one component of your profile so as long as you are in the 80% range for a selected school's GMAT you can at least explore the school further. What unfortunately concerns me is that you'd be among the older candidates and come from an overrepresented industry. Check out our post on applying as an older candidate, it can help you address that issue.

Good luck!

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for your inputs. Incidentally I am looking forward to a one year accelerated MBA course that could be a catalyst to my long term goal of moving to the strategic layer of an organization.Currently my work involves operations in the tactical layer.Could you please suggest some B-schools that might be worth a try?

More inputs for your reference-
CGPA- 78.55 (Bachelor Of Engineering)
IT Experience-10+ (Consulting,Business Intelligence Center Of Excellence) in an IT consulting company.
Civil Construction-1 yr.

Since this is my first GMAT attempt should I wait for another try?

Thanks,

AG

Hi again,

You may want to check out Executive MBA programs --as your chances for acceptance there will be higher given your 10+ years of experience. For programs like those geography is important -- most people seek programs near their location, rather than moving specifically to attend an EMBA program, and I don't know what your geographic requirements are. While a "good" program is a subjective judgment of course, I am afraid the top-20 programs are likely out of reach for your profile, based largely on your 660 and age. I suggest taking a very targeted approach of selecting programs that uniquely meet your needs and would be receptive older candidates -- as a whole European schools are generally more responsive to older candidates.

Best of luck,

Daniel Richards
