HELP! Strategies/tips

by sbuzzetto10 Wed Feb 09, 2011 2:57 pm

Hi--

I have been prepping for the LSAT for the past 4-5 months or so and have seen significant improvement in all the sections--except RC! SO frustrated. I'm taking the LSAT this Saturday and I'm running out of ideas. I am never able to make it to the 4th passage, and much of the time I am unable to get a high enough acccuracy to make up for this. I guess it's a speed issue--I can't seem to get a passage done in less than 10-12 minutes! I have tried reading the passage quickly and getting to the questions faster, reading it slower and marking, etc. The questions just take me too long, regardless of the method I use.

Does anyone have any tips that could help me speed up while maintaining accuracy?

Is there a certain order I should try attempting the questions in?

Any suggestions/tips on HOW to answer certain types of questions and how to eliminate answers?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!! I'm at a total loss. :x

Thanks in advance!

I'll admit that this advice is too late for you to apply it on Saturday. It would take weeks of practice to work on and then implement effectively. There are two key ideas on getting through the questions more quickly. It requires knowing what information the questions are testing.

To effectively and quickly answer the questions, you need to be able to determine the central argument, the proponents of each side, and the essential evidence in support of each side. Also, you need to be able to clearly and in an abstract way, describe the passage organization. When the passage organization is weak, the central arguments are more clear. When the central argument is less clear, the passage organization is strong. Focus on both and you'll have success in RC.

Good luck!
