Inferences in RC passages

by LSAT-Chang Thu Aug 04, 2011 9:57 pm

I came across something on pg. 60 of the RC strategy guide, which I don't agree with...

It says that if we have "Most people prefer Brand X to Brand Y," then we can infer that:

1. At least some people prefer Brand Y to Brand X

How can we infer this? I thought Most/Majority = 51~100, so if all people prefer Brand X to Brand Y, how is it possible that we can certainly infer that at least some people will prefer Brand Y to Brand X?

I'm looking for this in both the RC Strategy Guide and the LR Strategy Guide and I don't see it. But I'd like to check it out since I agree with you.

If most people prefer brand X to brand y, one cannot infer that some people prefer brand y to brand x. So I'm wondering if there is other context that would allow that inference to be established.

What book are you looking at again and what page? In case our editions have slightly different page numbers, what is the chapter and section that you're looking at?

Hey Matt,
I am looking at pg.60 of the RC strategy guide (second edition -latest one) in chapter 5 or 6 (dont have book with me now but its the correct answer characteristics chapter - right before incorrect answer chapter) under the heading of "characteristics of correct answers" and it briefly explains identification, inferences, and synthesis. It says that under inferences section about in the middle of the page. Let me know if you see it.

Ah! I see it. You know, I personally don't know how you can infer "2. At least some people prefer Brand Y to Brand X." But I'll check with some folks and see what consensus says and get back to you!

That's an error in the book. Yikes! You cannot infer from that information that at least some people prefer Y to X. Thanks for catching that So, and we'll get it fixed right away!
