It it better to read the questions first?

by christine514 Wed Feb 16, 2011 2:34 pm

Like many people I am having a hard time getting to the 4th passage within the 35 minute timeframe. Would skimming through the questions first (within 1 minute or so) help save time overall? Does any skilled test taker skims the questions before reading the passages? Thanks!

I wouldn't consider myself naturally skilled at RC, but I consistently score in the 99th percentile overall. RC is still my weak link, but I know what it's like to have to earn every point in RC. Originally, I wasn't even able to finish three passages.

I don't read the questions ahead of time, because I know (for the most part) what they're going to ask about. There are a few questions that draw on details from the passage in unpredictable ways. For these, you might benefit from a perusing of the questions ahead of time. But it's not something that is essential to the process.

Put skills into place that help you know what information you're likely to get asked questions about and then go back into the passage to answer the remaining questions.
