Passage Discussion

by uhdang Wed May 06, 2015 1:31 am

Taking a shot at the passage analysis. I welcome all the constructive criticisms.

Paragraph 1:

Connection between King and Thoreau's "Civil Disobedience" is popular, but Thoreau's general influence is not supported, because 1) Thoreau's other aspects would not have been in agreement with King's and 2) other transcendentalists writing are closer to King's idea.

*Stride towards freedom, Emerson, Fuller being noted.

Paragraph 2:

King advocated for reform of society while Thoreau was for individual reform (like other transcendentalists)

*Different opinion on how to act on Mexican War

Paragraph 3:

Transcendentalists "higher law" and King's distinction on just and unjust law both base on ethical standards on evaluating.

*Similar take on Fugitive Slave Law.

Overall:

The author introduces the common practice on King and Thoreau and disputes it with two reasons, which following two paragraphs get in detail.
