Passage Discussion

by hnadgauda Mon Jun 05, 2017 8:12 pm

Passage Map:

1: If a group isn't cohesive, members may filter what they say because they are afraid of being punished. This is why, generally, the more cohesive a group is, the less the group members have to filter what they say.

2: But cohesive groups have their downfalls as well: groupthink. This is when group members want the group to agree so much that they don't really scrutinize the decisions that the group makes.

3: Groupthink behavior has certain recurring factors that are listed in this para.

Scale: downsides of cohesiveness vs. downsides of non-cohesiveness? The author seems neutral...Please let me know if I'm wrong here! I'm not sure if my scale and assessment of author's opinion are correct.

Scale
Not cohesive enough vs. Too cohesive

Author's VP/Purpose
Highlight a Distinction / Describe a Problem / Call for a certain Solution

Important Lines (usually Author's view)
1-5 (cohesive = generally good),
21 (too much cohesive = bad),
40-52 (incredibly, that's ONE sentence … Pattern of Factors leading to too much cohesive),
52-58 (let's get a more precise understanding of what factors lead to too much cohesive)

Paragraph 1
Too little cohesion = bad

Paragraph 2
Too much cohesion = bad

Paragraph 3
Factors that lead to too much cohesion (plus a call to action)

Takeaway/Pattern: This is mainly just an informative look at the ups and downs of group cohesion. We want to have a general sense of why too little can be bad and why too much can be bad.
