1: Intro and context - collecting the similar in art vs. in cinema: in exhibiting art, we may do by creator, theme or historical period (aim something in common); in cinema "collecting similar" (author attitude) which has its parallel in the past (by director, start, etc.); the rediscovery of nonfiction films has been the subject of some notable retrospectives
2: Reasons why not good - Author voice: HOWEVER, collecting the similar is often inappropriate for early films (especially nonfiction); reasons: 1) would not have been the practice before, 2) dull for viewers, 3) nonfiction has been supporting films, 4) early cinemagoers saw program of a mix of everything from drama news, etc.
3: Specific critique of today's practices - Author voice: Film archives & retrospective festivals assume as if PRODUCTION is the only thing to ensure authenticity; film archives tries to restore films as they SUPPOSEDLY originally produced; they are presented as authentic (quotes illustrates author tone); in exhibition sometimes authenticity is out; HOWEVER, films are presented inauthentically, discarding program that give them the CONTEXT; author ends with his attitude toward it all that it IS NOT APPROPRIATE to NEGLECT the PAST INSIGHTS in this
