Can someone provide an official explanation? Here is my take on it:
p1- COG interview is one method for police to get more info out of cooperating witnesses than they otherwise would.
p2- Cog. Int. uses techniques to improve witness recall w/o increasing errors. BUT, there are limitations because it is complex and requires lots of training. Not great for officers.
p3- Alternative: Hypnosis. Less complex than CI but accuracy worse. Actually, it can make recall deteriorate. "false confidence" and not everyone susceptible to hypnosis are other drawbacks.
p4- Police need ideal method: no training, works for all witnesses, and improves accuracy. Closing eyes during recall fits the bill! Achieves benefits of CI w/o drawbacks of CI and hypnosis.
Scale: could do three way scale for this with CI, hypnosis, and eye closing. Eye closing is the favored choice by the author and evidence.
Last paragraph is the main point of passage and authors view.
