Passage Discussion

This passage gave me a bit of confusion on what exactly the important points were. :?

What would be embodied in the scale model?for this passage,I couldn't see it. All I saw were expanding on fruit flies and nematodes aand touching little bit about mammals.

I thought that the entire passage as a whole is about polarity and the different ways in which organisms go through the polarity.

Can you please clarify thr ppassage?thank you

yoohoo081,

I sympathize with you on this one. There really aren't two sides to a central argument in the text. That doesn't mean we have to abandon the scale though. The scale is a way of thinking, so simply looking for it will help orient ourselves and understand the passage.

The key to this passage is the apparent contradiction between the fact that different organisms have similar genetics (and develop in similar ways) but do this basic "embryonic orientation thing" in different ways. If I had to force this in to a scale it might look like the one I attached to this post. Take a look at it.

I know I made a bit of it up, but all I was doing is guessing at a possible other side. The scale is bent towards the position we have because we didn't actually get the other side. Let me know what you think about this. I hope this answer isn't too unsatisfying. I'm always a little disappointed when I have to make a scale like this.
